GPS Maps App
Designing a distraction-free turn-by-turn navigation system for modern drivers — reducing glance latency, eliminating night-glare, and maintaining smooth guidance even in zero-connectivity tunnels.

Business Challenge
Traditional navigation apps overwhelm drivers with excessive UI clutter, intrusive promotional pins, and micro-text that cannot be safely read at glance distances. At 65 mph, taking your eyes off the road for even 2 seconds equals traveling the length of two basketball courts blindfolded. The goal was to engineer a radical one-thumb, glanceable navigation interface that presents critical maneuvering information in under 0.8 seconds while offering complete offline resilience.
Research & User Pain Points
Driver field interviews (10 daily commuters) and in-vehicle usability testing sessions revealed:
- → Drivers struggled with small buttons placed out of natural thumb-reach on large dashboard phone mounts
- → Standard bright night modes caused harsh windshield reflections and pupil-dilation fatigue
- → Navigation froze or spun erratically when driving into subterranean parking lots and tunnels
- → Complex multi-lane highway splits lacked immediate, unambiguous lane-guidance indicators
User Flow
Design Decisions
One-thumb ergonomic reach zone
Positioned all interactive triggers (reroute, voice mute, hazard reporting) strictly within the lower 35% of the screen for safe single-handed access while mounted.
Obsidian anti-glare HUD
Engineered a pure-black (#090a10) dark mode featuring high-contrast neon accents, preventing optical glass reflections and maintaining night vision.
Pre-buffered vector caching
Automatically stores a 15-mile routing corridor in local memory, guaranteeing continuous step-by-step guidance without dropping frames in low-signal areas.
High-legibility lane ribbons
Designed high-contrast lane arrows with clear visual dimming on non-recommended lanes, allowing recognition in under 300ms peripheral glance.
Outcome
Glance latency reduction during highway lane changes verified in simulator benchmarks
Driver usability score across 15 on-road test participants for one-thumb layout
Zero windshield glare reflections and immediate lane comprehension in night testing
